All The Best People

Hold on, we haven’t had a post tangentially relating to The Shining for a while so here’s a particularly tenuous one…

BestPeople

In a case of life imitating art, this posh shop in London has used the same line as the eerily elitist manager of the Overlook hotel, Stuart Ullman, did when telling Wendy Torrance about past guests of the hotel…

Stuart Ullman: Four presidents, movie stars…
Wendy Torrance: Royalty?
Stuart Ullman: All the best people.

Way to go ‘ad’ people – you’ve invoked a demonic, genocidal, patriarchal force in your attempt to hock some threads to wannabe socialites. Well, actually, if the glove fits…

  1. Haven’t seen that yet. I still think my movie of the moment is District 9. Only thing that i find annoying though is the dialog with that overly thick south african accent. Under a lesser quality sound system it sounds almost distorted.

Oh well, Lincoln. Id recommend that movie.

  2. Mm, I wasn’t so into District 9. Too much shaky camera work for me! And the political/social metaphor it invokes in it’s premise isn’t really developed enough or paid off on. But some good alien/robot-blowing-stuff-up scenes.

  3. True, what’s inglorious basterds like? haven’t gotten round to seeing that yet. I’m on a producing role atm coming up with beats and synths etc. Sadly i can create the individual parts but don’t have the focus to make a full track yet.

Shaky camera work yeah i understand its why I hated Cloverfield

  4. awesome man, gonna watch it tonight. only two days till move to uni so i gotta pass time well xD

    hahaha – excellent observation!

Hiya mate – long time no see! I stumbled across this site whilst surfing the social graveyard of MySpace, and I must say I’m thoroughly impressed at the expanse of your vocabulary; surely only a matter of time before you’re a Guardian columnist!

However, where’s the Shining-critique!!! As I progressed further up the page, reading the interpretations of FMJ and IB, I was anticipating a hearty thesis on the relevance of Wendy’s visions towards the end of the film (particularly the vision of the Bear-like creature and the guy on the bed which has always eluded me), as well as the perceived reincarnation of Jack which is induced by the photo apparently taken in the 1920s. I watched it again the other week and I still can’t quite make up my mind.

…Just a suggestion for your next topic – when you get a minute!

    Hope you’re well mate.

  6. Hey, good to hear from you, thanks for appreciating my verbosity. Guardian columnist? I’m gunning for a spot on Newsnight Review.

A lack of a critique of The Shining is the elephant in the room on this blog – will rectify soon with a special overview of the myriad bizarre theories about the film. On Japan tour at mo so will get on it when I’m back.

Ahh! Well, in light of that, maybe a disquisition on Lost in Translation would be more appropriate!

‘For relaxing times, make it essay time…’

Indeed, make that analysis a priority upon your return! And don’t forget to throw in an explanation about how Jack is freed from the store-room by the perceived ‘spirits’…
